No. The base model works right out of the box. But the Elite model pairs with the free Tuya app (iOS & Android) to:

• Send care alerts to your phone
• Customize facial expressions
• Add plant photos and a name
• Switch modes (e.g. sleep mode, seasonal faces)
• Adjust plant type settings

All models are USB-rechargeable. Core models work best while plugged in. Elite models feature a built-in battery with up to 6 hours of unplugged display time.
